Yorkies are one of the most popular sought after of all the toy breeds. No
wonder - they are beautiful to look at, highly intelligent and overflowing
with liveliness, charm, affection and loyalty. Despite their small size, they
are full of courage, loyalty and affection.

Although this breed is small, these are little dogs who think they are much
bigger. A small dog, BIG attitude and they're always ready to prove it if
need be. They will defend their territory with certainty. Yorkies are not
afraid of heights and will jump off or out of your arms without realizing they
are too small to make to the ground without getting injured. Always keep a
firm grip on your puppy, if it wiggles and wants down let it have its way.
Getting down on the floor for them until they feel secure with you is a good
idea.

As they get older they will find your lap the most preferred place to take a
nap. Never leave them unattended on a bed, puppy stairs are available and
they will quickly learn to use them if you just show them a safer way of
getting down.

Yorkies have an acute sense of hearing and will alert their owners to the
slightest sign of intruders with plenty of barking. Yorkies can be excitedly
territorial and take grand honor in protecting their homes and what they
perceive to be their property; from harm. Because they have acute hearing
they make wonderful alarms against any outside intrusions. But once given
assurance from their master they will calm down and be friendly. Yorkies
are small enough to carry and are ideal for anyone with a small home or
apartment.

The Yorkie is happy to go on quite long walks, but is equally happy to run
around a small garden or home, providing it has enough toys and
distractions to occupy its lively mind. They have a natural curiosity,
persistence, intent and agility. They tend to show a particular interest and
willingness to hunt mice, squirrels, chipmunks, birds, lizards, frogs - even
bugs just about any small creature that moves will gain a highly focused
interest of the Yorkie. A Yorkie home will almost always be free from
unwanted Pests and rodents - your yorkie will be more than happy to see to
that!

Yorkies make wonderful pets and will generally live in harmony with other
dogs and sometimes even cats, but the introduction of a new pet into any
Yorkie home must be handled correctly. If not, a Yorkie may fight to stake
its territorial claim. But, if introductions are made proper and the right
precautions are taken, they can meld and form loyal friendships with other
animals.

Yorkies generally love people and love to please. However, extreme
caution should be taken with them in the company of young children. Some
Yorkies are not fond of young children and may even be afraid of them
because they move too quickly for the Yorkie. There is always a serious
risk for a Yorkie to be accidentally mishandled or dropped from the hands
of a child, causing a terrible injury. Older children who are versed in the
proper way to handle a small puppy will be met with licks and tail wags.

Knowing the yorkie temperament and how it will blend with your home and
your family will help give you an understanding of whether your home will
make a good Yorkie home. Because they have a long coat, Yorkies are not
suitable for anyone who does not have the time to spend on the grooming
and bathing this breed requires. Most pet Yorkies do in fact have their
coats trimmed short or shaved for convenience and hygiene. Therefore,
anyone obtaining a pet Yorkie must remember that there will be additional
grooming expenses to take into consideration. It is not all that difficult to
learn to give your Yorkies a hair cut yourself.

Yorkies do not have an undercoat, they do not shed which makes them
ideal for anyone with dog dander allergies. Even with a long coat, they feel
the cold very easily, and like most Toy breeds prefer the comfort of
coziness and warmth. They enjoy being pampered. Yorkies are definitely
not a breed to keep outside in a kennel. When going out in cold or wet
weather they will appreciate a warm dog coat to wear.

Although regular grooming may be an added expense for the Yorkie
owner, Yorkies eat very little, and are not expensive to feed. But they do
require a very small kernel type food common for small dogs. Large kibble
sized food can cause a tooth to be broken on any toy breed.

Yorkie puppies may have "tipped" or "tilted" ears until they are around 6
months old. I am frequently asked about this when owners purchase a 10
week old puppy with nice erect ears, only to find that the ears drop again
around 4 months of age. This is often because at this time the Yorkie is
shedding it's milk teeth and cutting it's adult teeth, which can cause the
ears to go up and down daily, and owner's should not be unduly concerned
during this natural stage. However, it is important to keep the hair on the
top third of the ear flap trimmed very short. This will stop the ears from
being weighed down by excessive hair until they are firmly "set".
